Cipro instruction for use

Cipro antibiotic is a broad spectrum antimicrobial drug. It has a white tint and a powdery structure, practically insoluble in water and ethanol. Its feature is that it is able to remove all bacteria that are in the body, not only active, but also those located in the incubation period.

So, let’s look more specifically at which bacteria are affected by the cipro antibiotic, what indications there are for its use, and how to take it in a particular case.

Diseases in which this antibiotic is prescribed a course of treatment

Such an antibiotic as ciprofloxacin or its analogues is prescribed by doctors for the following diseases and ailments:

  • throat diseases;
  • infections on the skin, ENT organs, and internal organs;
  • gynecological infections;
  • eye infections
  • sepsis;
  • peritonitis;
  • infectious diseases of bones and joints;
  • meningitis;
  • bacteremia;
  • septicemia;
  • diseases caused by gonococci, salmonella and shigella;
  • infections against cancer;
  • genitourinary infections.

The course of treatment with the antibiotic ciprofloxacin is from five days to two weeks. If the infection is difficult and taking the drug in the form of tablets is not possible, but the doctor may prescribe it intravenously. During treatment with ciprofloxacin, a large amount of water should be consumed, the tablets themselves are taken on an empty stomach so that the active substance quickly enters the body.

It is highly advisable to strictly control the process of taking the antibiotic in order to prevent overdose. If an overdose still occurs, immediately rinse the contents of the stomach and drink plenty of water.

Cipro release form

Depending on the severity of the disease and dosage, ciprofloxacin is used in the following forms:

  • coated tablets;
  • solution for infusion;
  • ampoules for injections;
  • ointment and suspension;
  • eye and ear drops.

The most common and convenient form of this antibiotic is tablets. It is most convenient for the patient himself, in addition, this technique, unlike injection, reduces the risk of complications from the action of ciprofloxacin. It is worth noting that, in terms of action, ciprofloxacin tablets are not inferior to ampoules for injection. In some cases, taking pills will be the completely preferred form of antibiotic use, in particular for intestinal diseases, when the active substance should immediately be directed to the focus of infection.

The shell on ciprofloxacin tablets is necessary to protect the gastric juice during absorption, and also some ciprofloxacin analogues cover the tablets with special capsules for protection.

Another popular form of release of this antibiotic is drops. They are often prescribed for ophthalmic diseases, in particular, for purulent eye diseases, as well as in the following cases:

  • bacterial conjunctivitis;
  • corneal ulcers;
  • blepharitis;
  • complications in ophthalmic surgery;
  • chronic eye diseases.

Drops for the eyes are produced as a solution of 0.3% yellow or yellow-green, the active substance of the drug is ciprofloxacin hydrochloride contained in drops in the amount of 3 mg.

Cipro dosage

The dosage of this drug is prescribed depending on the disease and the condition of the patient. As a rule, the daily intake is from 250 to 750 mg up to two times a day, while the course of treatment can be from ten days to a month.

With internal administration, a single dose is up to 400 mg, it should be administered twice a day for one or two weeks or more, if necessary. As a rule, the introduction of an antibiotic in the form of drops for half an hour is practiced.

Local use of ciprofloxacin involves the introduction of up to two drops every few hours, while the interval is reduced when the patient’s condition improves.

In general, regardless of the form of ciprofloxacin use, its daily norm for an adult is not more than 1.5 grams.

Side effects

The most common side effects noted with ciprofloxacin are:

  • anxiety and general depression;
  • insomnia;
  • hearing impairment;
  • decrease in blood pressure and disturbance of heart rhythms;
  • hives or itching on the skin;
  • thrombocytosis;
  • the appearance of blood discharge during urination.

In addition, in order to prevent diarrhea when taking this antibiotic, its intake should be accompanied by the absorption of a large amount of liquid.

While taking ciprofloxacin, you should be extremely careful while driving, as well as when performing potentially hazardous activities that require a quick reaction and increased concentration.

Please note that ciprofloxacin is prescribed to patients who suffer from epilepsy, vascular diseases, brain lesions and from a history of seizures, extremely carefully and only in cases of emergency, these are the most “dangerous” categories.

The drug must be discontinued in the following cases:

  • with the appearance of severe diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis;
  • with pain in the tendons;
  • with tenosynovitis.

It should also be during the course of treatment as little time as possible under direct sunlight.

Contraindications Cipro

The antibiotic should never be prescribed to the following categories of patients:

  • pregnant women;
  • nursing mothers;
  • children under 15 years old;
  • persons predisposed to epilepsy.

To maximize the effectiveness of the drug, it can not be taken along with those medicines that help reduce the acidity of the stomach. Also, it should be taken with extreme caution in case of atherosclerosis of blood vessels, liver and kidney failure, as well as mental disorders.

Compatibility of Cipro and Alcohol

Many patients who are prescribed ciprofloxacin are interested in whether it is possible to drink alcohol during the course of treatment. Naturally, this is not about severe forms of certain diseases.

However, we must not forget that ciprofloxacin is a fairly strong drug, and antibiotics with alcohol are not recommended.

There are many reasons why you should refrain from drinking alcohol while taking the drug. In particular, these are the reasons:

  • an antibiotic makes the effect of alcohol stronger, and alcohol reduces the effect of the drug;
  • alcohol and the drug are extremely toxic, it affects the liver simultaneously with a double power;
  • drinking alcohol while taking ciprofloxacin increases the risk of side effects.

Also, after completing the course of treatment, doctors recommend that you refrain from drinking alcohol for another two days so that the drug is finally removed from the body.

Do not think that from the use of alcohol in small doses during treatment there will be nothing. Even a glass of wine or a glass of beer can do the trick and make the problem worse. Therefore, if it exists and you have been prescribed ciprofloxacin, it is better to cure it first and only then delight yourself with your favorite drinks.
